What Is the Project Management Institute?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a global professional organisation supporting people who manage projects, programmes and portfolios. It offers professional certifications, learning resources and a community for project professionals. 

PMI also publishes project management standards and resources, including the PMBOK® Guide. These help professionals develop a shared understanding of project management practices and apply them to different working environments

Which PMI Certification Should You Consider?

PMI offers credentials for different stages of a project management career. Choosing one should start with your existing education, experience and responsibilities.

CAPM®: For Foundational Project Management Knowledge

The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) is an option for people starting their project management journey or wanting to demonstrate foundational knowledge.

PMI currently lists these eligibility requirements:

• • A secondary qualification, such as a high school diploma or global equivalent
  • A minimum age of 18
  • At least 23 hours of project management education completed before the examination

PMP®: For Experienced Project Professionals

The Project Management Professional (PMP®) is intended for professionals with experience leading projects.

Eligibility depends on your education and professional experience. PMI’s current pathways generally require two to five years of qualifying experience, depending on the educational route, alongside the required training or an active CAPM certification.

Is PMI Certification the Same as an NQF Qualification?

No. A PMI certification and a South African NQF qualification are different credentials. PMI certification involves meeting the institute’s eligibility rules and passing its assessment. An occupational qualification follows a defined learning pathway with knowledge, practical and workplace components.

For example, the Occupational Certificate: Project Manager, SAQA ID 101869, is listed at NQF Level 5 with 240 credits. Its curriculum includes knowledge modules, practical skills and work experience. 

When comparing options, ask yourself whether you need structured foundational learning, recognition of existing professional experience, or preparation for a particular certification.
