Thank God It’s Friday? What a Waste

Living a Meaningful Life
Every Monday morning, as the lift rises, someone sighs, “It’s Monday.” By Friday, the same voice cheers, “Thank God it’s Friday!”
It’s a weekly ritual that almost everyone takes part in, a sigh of resignation followed by a gasp of relief. We count down the days, survive the week, and celebrate its end as if freedom only begins on Friday evening. But what if that very pattern is the problem? It’s as if we leave our true selves in the parking lot on Monday morning and only pick them up again on Friday night. Week after week, year after year. What a waste , seventy percent of our time, lived in slow motion.
Imagine if we could make the most of our time, not just 30% of it, but all of it.
The secret? Aligning what we do with who we are. When our work connects with our purpose, every day becomes worth living.
Aligning Work with Who We Are
The secret lies in alignment. When what we do reflects who we are, work stops being a burden and becomes an expression of our purpose. It’s less about what we do and more about why we do it and how we feel while doing it.
Think about cleaning your home. Most people don’t love the act of sweeping or scrubbing, yet they do it willingly because they want to live in a pleasant, beautiful space. The goal gives meaning to the task. What if our daily work inspired the same sense of purpose, not because you like every task, but because it contributes to something that matters deeply to us?
You’ve probably heard someone say, “She’s lucky, she turned her passion into her profession.” Personally, I believe that it is not necessarily passion but meaning that counts. But when most people are asked, “What is your purpose?” silence follows. Many of us have never truly taken the time to discover what we want from life, what makes us come alive.
The Four Dimensions of Purpose
While each of us defines meaning differently, there are four universal dimensions through which purpose often unfolds.
1. Growth and Expansion
We are wired to want more, to learn new skills, gain qualifications, move forward, and improve our circumstances. The drive to grow is natural. The wise, however, channel that hunger toward something higher: not just material success, but the pursuit of truth, excellence, and self-mastery.
2. Harmony and Joy
No one truly desires conflict. Deep down, we long for peace and balance, both within ourselves and with the world around us. Harmony arises when our inner rhythm aligns with the greater rhythm of life, with nature, others, and the flow of our own intuition.
3. Service and Contribution
Even though humans are often self-focused, something extraordinary happens when we serve others. The act of giving affirms our worth, deepens our connection, and brings genuine joy. Contribution reminds us that our lives have significance beyond ourselves.
4. Spiritual Fulfilment
As we grow, seek harmony, and serve others, we begin to sense a deeper connection, a oneness with everything around us. Out of that awareness arises the longing to unite with something greater, to experience the sacred in everyday life.
Together, these four dimensions give shape to a meaningful life. They remind us that purpose is not a single goal but an ongoing journey of becoming.
Living Consciously
Our overarching purpose may remain constant, but how we live it evolves. At one stage, learning might be our focus. Later, family or career may take centre stage. Meaning changes with time, and that’s natural. What matters is that we live consciously rather than drift from one day to the next.
Meaning is not found in our actions alone, but in the sense, we give them. When we align our choices with our values, every day becomes an expression of purpose. We no longer live for Fridays. We live fully, every single day.
A Closing Thought
At iFundi, we believe education is more than a pathway to employment, it’s a journey toward purpose.
By helping people grow, contribute, and connect, we make learning not only useful but meaningful. Because when our work aligns with who we are, every moment counts.
