Medscheme is South Africa’s largest health risk management services provider and second largest medical aid administrator. The company has a reach of over three million people through their network of branches located throughout South Africa, as well as Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Mauritius.
Medscheme values the development of its staff and seeks to ensure that its employees are skilled and educated to occupy growth opportunities within the company. It is this desire which encouraged Medscheme to launch its in-houseLearning and Training Academy. The Academy was launched in 2013, however it was in the year 2014 which saw the incorporation of accredited qualifications.
“We internally train an approximate figure between 20 to 30 people per month on various qualifications, depending on the number of new recruits we have. We are definitely seeing our return on investment, through the improved skill-set and productivity of our learners”, says Melissa Cronje Medscheme’s Training Officer Human Capital.
The most recent qualifications which have been added to the Medscheme roster is Wealth Management NQF 4, as well as End-User Computing NQF 3. Medscheme, in conjunction with its project managers, i-Fundi, are currently of rolling out the End-User Computing programme, which commenced this month, for learners situated in Roodepoort. The project is due to be completed in December. In addition, Medscheme has also set the ball rolling with the Call Centre NQF 3 for learners situated in Cape Town.
Cronje believes that although the work entailed in making sure that the Training Division meets its monthly targets, meeting BBBEE compliance, amongst other tight deadlines, is arduous, the positive results make the tasks that much more rewarding. “We look forward to changing more of our employees lives with quality accredited qualifications”, she concludes.
